2026 PBS Medications: Cheaper Treatment for Arthritis, Liver Disease, and MS (2026)

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) has unveiled a new list of medications for 2026, offering reduced pricing and expanded treatment options for various medical conditions. One of the key additions is adalimumab (Humira), which will now be used to treat juvenile idiopathic arthritis, a form of arthritis affecting children. This medication is already approved for other pediatric inflammatory diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, by calming the immune system and reducing inflammation. The Federal Government estimates that up to 30,100 Australians aged 0-24 could be living with arthritis, making this a significant development in arthritis treatment. The subsidy reduces the cost from $650 per script to $25, making it more accessible to those in need. Another notable inclusion is odevixibat (Bylvay), a new treatment for progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis, a rare genetic liver disease affecting children. Ublituximab (Briumvi) is also new, approved for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) treatment, acting on B-cells to reduce inflammation and slow disease progression. This medication has been used by over 14,000 patients through the PBS in 2024, with a script costing around $15,000 without subsidy. The PBS price reduction from $31.60 to $25 on January 1, 2026, and the concessional co-payment of $7.70 until 2030, further enhances accessibility. These new listings demonstrate the PBS's commitment to providing cost-effective treatments and improving healthcare outcomes for Australians.
