In a bold move that has the basketball world buzzing, the New York Knicks have signed Jeremy Sochan, a 22-year-old forward, to bolster their bench for the remainder of the season. But here’s where it gets controversial: is this a game-changing addition or a risky gamble on a player who fell out of favor with the San Antonio Spurs? Let’s dive in.
The Knicks are rounding out their roster with an athletic prospect to deepen their frontcourt, a strategic play as they gear up for a potential NBA Finals run. Sochan, standing at 6-foot-8 and drafted ninth overall, was once a highly touted prospect. He earned a spot on the 2023 All-Rookie team with the Spurs and carved out a significant role in his first three NBA seasons. However, his star dimmed this season, partly due to the rise of rookie forward Carter Bryant, leading to his waiver on Wednesday. This unexpected turn opened the door for his arrival in New York.
According to league sources, Sochan is set to join the Knicks in New York on Monday and could make his debut as early as Thursday, when the team faces the Pistons at home after the All-Star break. The opportunity to play for a contender with strong veteran leadership was a key factor in his decision, sources say.
The Knicks hope Sochan will provide versatile two-way depth on the wing and in the frontcourt. And this is the part most people miss: while his addition seems promising, questions linger about why he didn’t succeed in San Antonio. A league insider suggests Sochan struggled both offensively and defensively this season, casting doubt on whether he can turn things around. Yet, the Knicks are betting big on his potential.
Interestingly, the Knicks had their eyes on Sochan before the trade deadline but couldn’t finalize a deal with the Spurs involving Guerschon Yabusele. However, team president Leon Rose ultimately got his man—albeit through a different route. The Knicks effectively swapped Yabusele for Jose Alvarado, thanks to Yabusele surprisingly waiving his $5.8 million player option for next season. Rumors suggest Yabusele, a native of France, may have secured a lucrative deal overseas, offsetting his financial loss.
This move freed up the cap space needed to sign Sochan to a minimum contract. Born in Oklahoma to a Polish mother, Sochan made waves as the youngest member of Poland’s national team during the 2022 EuroBasket qualifiers. He showed early promise with the Spurs, averaging over 11 points in his first three seasons and starting in 149 of his first 184 games. His colorful hair dye choices also made him a fan favorite.
However, his 3-point shooting hasn’t improved significantly—he’s shooting just 25.7% from deep this season—and he reportedly sought more playing time. With the Knicks’ current lineup, minutes may be hard to come by, especially with OG Anunoby and Josh Hart dominating the forward rotation. Mitchell Robinson and rookie Mo Diawara serve as the primary frontcourt backups.
Yet, there’s room for another big forward, particularly when injuries strike. Anunoby’s recent toe injury, for instance, thrust Diawara into a larger role, where he averaged 21.5 minutes per game before the All-Star break. Diawara has exceeded expectations in his 3-and-D role, shooting an impressive 41.3% from beyond the arc. Josh Hart praised Diawara’s defensive prowess and decision-making, calling him a player with a bright future.
Sochan, however, brings more experience and better ballhandling skills to the table. His addition also pushes disappointing first-round pick Pacôme Dadiet further out of the rotation. Still, it’s hard to see Diawara losing his spot anytime soon, given his stellar performances.
