Melbourne forecast to crack 45 degrees in worst heatwave since Black Saturday (2026)

Get ready for a scorching day, Melbourne! We're facing a brutal heatwave, with temperatures predicted to soar above 45 degrees Celsius. This is the worst heatwave since the infamous Black Saturday in 2009, and it's a real doozy.

Parts of Victoria's northwest are set to break records, with forecasts reaching a scorching 49 degrees. That's right, folks, we're talking about the Mallee region, including Mildura and Ouyen, where the previous record was a 'cool' 47 degrees.

But here's where it gets controversial... Ambulance Victoria is preparing for the worst, setting up an emergency operations center and redeploying paramedics to the areas hit hardest by the heat. They're urging Victorians to only call Triple Zero for serious emergencies and to use alternative services like the state's virtual emergency department and Nurse on Call.

Powercor, the electricity distributor for Melbourne's CBD and Victoria's west, is bracing for widespread power outages as grids are expected to be overwhelmed by air conditioners.

Melbourne is predicted to swelter through a maximum of 45 degrees, just a tad lower than the 46.4 degrees recorded on Black Saturday. Police and State Emergency Service volunteers have been doorknocking over 1000 homes in the Otways, where the Carlisle River fire has been burning out of control. Residents in communities south of Colac and north of the Great Ocean Road have been warned to evacuate before sunset on Monday, or risk their lives.

Evacuation warnings extend from Gellibrand in the west to areas neighboring Lorne in the east. Popular holiday towns between Aireys Inlet and Yuulong, including Lorne and Apollo Bay, have been advised to monitor conditions and be prepared to leave.

All Great Otway National Park visitor sites and state forests are closed until further notice, with 53 parks and state forests closed statewide due to ongoing fires.

A total fire ban has been declared for Victoria on Tuesday, with the Country Fire Authority warning of "extreme" fire danger in the state's west, southwest, and central districts, and "high" fire danger across the rest of Victoria.

The emergency service hasn't forecast "catastrophic" fire conditions, but they're not taking any chances. CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said, "While all fires are being treated seriously, we're particularly concerned about the Carlisle River fire in the Otways."

Heffernan urged everyone to restrict unnecessary travel and pause farming activities on Tuesday.

Geelong is also predicted to hit a maximum of 45 degrees, while the Wimmera region could reach up to 48 degrees. Northerly winds will bring hot air into Victoria, followed by a south-westerly change that will bring cooler conditions, but not until late Tuesday evening.

"For the south, it's just one very hot day ahead, with milder conditions on Wednesday," said senior meteorologist Simon Timcke from the Bureau of Meteorology.

The change will provide limited relief in the north but send temperatures plummeting in Melbourne, with a maximum of 24 degrees predicted for Wednesday. It could also bring more bushfire smoke across Melbourne in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The previously forecast week-long heatwave in the state's north has stretched to eight days, with temperatures in the high 30s or low 40s predicted through Saturday. To make matters worse, Tuesday's wind change is expected to be dry, potentially blowing up dust in the state's west. Very little rainfall is expected across Victoria until next weekend.

"We're not expecting any rainfall with the change in the Melbourne area," Timcke said. "The northeast might get a little, but very little in the short term... and that's not until next weekend. If we do see any rainfall, it will be light and insignificant for firefighting efforts."

There's a slight chance of dry thunderstorms over the state's west on Tuesday. The "sharp, gusty" south-westerly change will reach the southwest coast in the afternoon.

Twelve aircraft and 300 firefighters are battling the Otways blaze, which grew to over 9000 hectares by Monday afternoon. "That's a significant growth in the last 48 hours," said state response controller Alistair Drayton.

"This fire won't be contained if it breaks out," he warned.

Maximum temperatures in Gippsland are forecast in the mid- to high-30s on Tuesday. Buses are replacing trains on some V/Line services as heat expands the tracks, and Metro services' speed is reduced due to track temperature.

"On days where the ambient temperature reaches 42 degrees and above in Melbourne, the maximum speed limit is reduced to 70km/h across the entire Metro network," Metro said.

The Australian Open will open its gates earlier on Tuesday due to the heat, at 9 am instead of 10 am. Organizers have delayed the wheelchair competition for 24 hours, and play on outdoor courts could be suspended during the worst conditions.

Victoria recorded its highest Sunday temperature at Kyabram, reaching 45 degrees. The remote outback town of Oodnadatta in South Australia hit 48.5 degrees on Sunday, while Hay in NSW's southwest crept past 47 degrees.

More than 1000 properties in Victoria have been damaged by bushfires this summer, with 289 of them being homes.

This heatwave is a serious concern, and it's important to stay informed and take necessary precautions. Remember, it's not just about the temperature; it's about the impact on our communities and the environment.

And this is the part most people miss... It's not just about surviving the heat; it's about supporting each other and being prepared for the potential challenges ahead.

So, what do you think? Are we prepared for this extreme heatwave? How can we ensure our communities stay safe and supported during these challenging times? Let's discuss in the comments!
