A wind farm that leaves no trace? It's not a fantasy but a reality with Ørsted's Hornsea 3 project. This ambitious wind farm, located 120 km off the Norfolk coast, will power millions of homes with green energy. But the real story lies in what's happening onshore.
The construction of this massive project required an extensive network of underground cables, stretching 51 km from Weybourne to Swardeston. However, Ørsted is committed to leaving no trace of this infrastructure.
But here's where it gets impressive: Two-thirds of the farmland disturbed for cable laying has already been restored to its original state, and the remaining sections are well on their way. This is thanks to the dedication of Ørsted's senior land and property manager, Jack McPherson, who ensures the land is reinstated with care.
Jack's passion for soil conservation is evident: "We're protecting one of the world's most valuable resources: soil." His team meticulously removes and replaces the topsoil, ensuring the land is returned to its original condition, with minimal impact on crop yields.
And this is the part most people miss: It's not just about the soil. Ørsted works closely with landowners, like David Jones of Morley Farms, to minimize disruption. They plant seed mixes to prevent erosion and support local wildlife, and even replant native hedgerows, creating natural habitats and windbreaks.
"Good communication is key," says David, emphasizing the importance of Ørsted's collaborative approach. The company's commitment to being considerate developers is clear, as they navigate challenges with weather, road networks, and more, all while keeping landowners' interests at heart.
The final reinstatement phase is set for completion by autumn, with an event planned for March to share more details. Ørsted's dedication to environmental stewardship is an inspiring example of how renewable energy projects can coexist harmoniously with nature.
